A Study of Respirable Silica in Underground Coal Mines: Sources

چکیده

An ongoing resurgence of occupational lung disease among coal miners in the United States has been linked to respirable crystalline silica (RCS). To better protect miners, a deeper understanding key exposure factors is needed. As part larger investigation RCS 15 mines, this paper describes analysis mass content two types samples: (1) mine dust (RCMD) collected standardized locations each mine; and (2) generated laboratory from primary source materials, including rock strata being mined at production face, material obtained collection system on roof bolter machines, products applied by mine. expected, results indicate that drilled for bolting or extracted along with are major many mines—although seam itself can contain significant some mines. While encountered central Appalachian mines not necessarily higher than other regions, sheer abundance thin-seam explain relatively typically observed RCMD region.

Study to Assess Respirable Dust Exposures in Underground U.S. Coal Mines

In 1991 the Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a special program to assess occupational exposures to respirable coal mine dust in underground coal mines. Priority was given to longwall mining operations, mines with a history ofhaving a problem controlling dust to the applicable standard, and a representative number of all other mines. Measurements were obtained on approximately 720...

Evaluation of occupational exposures to respirable dust in underground coal mines.

Dust can be produced by almost all mining operations in underground coal mines and seen all around the mine. Different occupational groups get exposed to different dust levels and in order to minimize the probability of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), it is necessary to investigate the workers exposed to dust. This study aimed to evaluate the dust concentration conditions in unde...

Identifying sources of respirable quartz and silica dust in underground coal mines in southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky

Prior research has suggeste d that the source of respirable silica dust in underground coal mines is typically the immediate top or bottom lithology adjacent to the mined seam, not mineral matter bound within the mined coal bed. Geochemical analyses were applied in an effort to identify the specific source rock of respirable quartz dust in coal mines. The analyses also demonstrate the compositi...

Controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines in the United States

As mining operations in the United States (US) have become more productive, con trolling the dust exposure of mine workers has become more challenging. In response, US mining operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and are looking to emerging control tech nologies in an effort to better control airborne respirable dust levels. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the ...

Gas Drainage Improvement in Underground Coal Mines

Effective gas management is vital to the success of the longwall mining in the Bulli seam, in the Southern Coalfield, Sydney Basin, NSW, Australia. The evolution of gas drainage methods and practices are discussed with respect to gas type, gas drainage lead time and prevailing geological conditions. Both underground to inseam drilling and surface to inseam drilling techniques are described at b...
